Books I Have Recently Read and Loved and Eaten Food With

I have read the two previous titles by Jane Harper and had to read this one when it came out!  The novel takes place in the Australian desert where there are few people living and the book begins with Nathan and Bub Bright traveling to the desolate area where their brother Cameron's body was discovered.  The story follows the Bright family as Nathan works to discover if Cameron's death was a suicide or a murder, all told in the haunting shadow of Nathan's late, abusive father.  Harper does an excellent job of making you feel hot, uncomfortable and dusty, setting the atmosphere for the entire story.  I was seriously looking over my shoulder while I read this book.
This book messed with my head (in a good way).  The story mimics being inside a brain severed from reality and I enjoyed every minute of it.  In 1935 Prague, Dr. Viktor Kosarek becomes convinced that there lies within all killers an evil he refers to as The Devil's Aspect.  It's with this in mind, as well as the recent killings of the Jack-the-Ripper imitator known as Leather Apron, that Viktor works through the minds of some of Prague's worst criminals against the eerie backdrop of the Hrad Orlu Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
This book broke my heart.  Eden Malcolm, maimed during an explosion in      which he was the only soldier to survive.  But his survival limits him to lying in a bed unable to move or speak.  Once Eden regains consciousness, the only thing he can do is think.  And he has a lot of time for this.  In this short novel, we follow Eden's life up to his deployment and get to meet his wife and daughter.  A claustrophobic story during which you'll find yourself holding your breath for a lot of different reasons.

Written in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes, the second in the Daniel Hawthorne detective series does not disappoint.  This novel leads readers through watery caves and the homes of wealthy British lawyers, surprising even the most astute of mystery readers.  An entertaining and well-crafted read.  Horowitz has done it again!
